CBD and Clean Beauty: Why We’re Bucking The Trend—For Now
There’s no denying that CBD is the “it” ingredient of the moment. It’s everywhere: in coffee, sodas, body lotions, chocolates, and gummies, not to mention the more straightforward vitamin-like capsules and tinctures. So you might be wondering why we haven’t launched any CBD-based skincare products at Follain yet. Allow us to explain.
Some research suggests that CBD has the potential to be a powerful ingredient for skincare. But there’s still so much that’s unknown about this buzzy ingredient and many experts agree that more studies are needed. (Lots of research has been done on cannabis, but not necessarily on CBD alone).
Before we bring a new product into our portfolio, we do our homework—and LOTS of it. Although CBD is having its moment in the sun, we’re OK being a little behind the trend. In fact, that’s usually what we aim for at Follain, because it means we’ve taken the time to do our due diligence—combing through scientific lingo and lots of studies—so that you don’t have to. To get a product on our shelves, it takes more than just an ingredient list that’s free of toxic chemicals; we also get to the know the makers and learn about their production processes, and select a panel of Follain employees to test the product. That testing takes place over several weeks, as we look at everything from ease of use (e.g.: does the packaging make it messy or difficult to use) to efficacy, making sure it delivers the benefits it promises to. Each year, we test hundreds of products and only around 10% actually join the Follain family.
But back to CBD: We’ve already started looking into the research and evaluating whether it has staying power as an ingredient in skincare. In the upcoming months, we’ll continue talking to experts, reviewing the latest research on CBD, and connecting with CBD-based beauty brands. If and when we do launch CBD-based beauty brands at Follain, we’ll be confident that they meet our strict standards (in ingredients, sourcing, production, benefits, and more) and work wonders for your skin, too.
