Here’s Why Silent Spring Institute is Clean Beauty’s Secret Weapon
Our holiday giving partner helps us ensure that every product on our shelves (and on our site) is safe and non-toxic.
Since the first Follain store opened its doors in Boston in 2013, we’ve been committed to selling the safest, most effective beauty products out there. But the world of clean beauty is ever-changing, and part of our mission is to stay informed about research related to toxic chemicals and personal care products. This is how we ensure that our list of restricted ingredients always reflects the latest science.
There are several organizations that help us do what we do, and none is more important than Silent Spring Institute. To mark Giving Tuesday, we’re proud to donate 5% of all sales to the institute on Tuesday, December 3. Whether you’re shopping on follain.com or in one of our stores, your purchase will help us give back on the day.
What is Silent Spring Institute?
Silent Spring Institute is a scientific research organization that works to uncover the links between environmental chemicals and women’s health, especially breast cancer. The institute focuses on prevention rather than treatment, which—you might be surprised to learn—is actually not very common. In fact, the California Breast Cancer Research Program reports that of $2 billion spent on breast cancer research each year, less than 10% goes to studying prevention.
But, back to Silent Spring. The institute’s 15 scientists have explored everything from food packaging and drinking water to hormone disrupting chemicals in hair care products. And they are total change-makers. By exposing the dangers lurking in everyday products and our environment, they not only affect public policy but they also empower consumers to make healthier choices and become advocates for product safety.
Putting Toxic Chemicals to the Test
One way they’re doing that is through their Detox Me Action Kit, a simple test that detects the presence of 10 common household chemicals in your body. The 10 selected are all endocrine disruptors, which means they interfere with the body’s natural hormones.
The results can be eye-opening. When a few of us took the test, we learned that we had lower levels of the toxic chemicals typically found in conventional beauty products, proving that our clean beauty habit is making a difference. But we had higher levels of other types of chemicals, a good reminder that clean beauty is just one piece of the puzzle. Thankfully, the results come with tips for reducing your exposure to toxic chemicals.
If you want to enroll in the Detox Me study, hang tight! The Silent Spring team got a huge response when they first launched the project, so they’re not taking new participants at the moment. But they assured us that more kits will be available in the future. For now, their Detox Me app is a great place to start, plus you can sign up to be notified when more Detox Me Action Kits are ready.
Why Silent Spring Institute is Important for Clean Beauty
Silent Spring’s research has opened our eyes to the connections between the products we use and our health, proving that what you put on your body and in your body does matter. Their work has helped inspire the clean beauty movement by allowing us to know what’s safe and what’s not—no guesswork involved. At Follain, we simply couldn’t do what we do without them.
So this Giving Tuesday, know that your purchase comes with a little extra good, supporting the researchers who’ve proven that clean beauty is not a trend: It’s a must.
