The Clean Beauty Guide to Treating Acne

The Clean Beauty Guide to Treating Acne

Clean beauty products for acne

If you are currently suffering from acne or have suffered from acne in the past, you know that there the words “clear skin” are highly coveted. As a six-year chronic acne sufferer myself, I am here to tell you that you are NOT alone in your acne journey. Clear skin is an attainable goal (with a little bit of elbow grease and patience). Just remember that the journey to clear skin is not a sprint, but a marathon. It will take time, but it will be worth it in the long run.

What is Acne?

In a clinical sense: Acne is a condition of this skin where hair follicles become clogged by oil or dead skin cells causing the skin to become inflamed and infected, ultimately resulting in pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, and/or cysts.

In a figurative sense: Acne is the worst. No need to sugar coat it—nobody enjoys having acne!

What Causes Acne?

There are a variety of different reasons that would cause acne to rise, or encourage acne, including:

Hormones: Changes in hormone levels are one of the most common causes of acne. There are a multitude of reasons why one’s hormones would fluctuate, but some of the most common reasons are puberty and pregnancy.

Stress: High stress can trigger an increase in cortisol, known as the “stress hormone.” This prompts the skin’s sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, thus leading to an increase in acne.

Food: A unbalanced diet, or a binge of unhealthy, greasy food can result in your skin breaking out. Diet is a key component to keeping a clear complexion. A balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, teas, and nuts can help to keep your skin inflammation down.

How Can I Treat My Acne?

While there are many steps that you can take to work towards having clear skin, having a clean and non-toxic skincare routine is one of the most important. Since you do absorb up to 60% of what you put on your skin topically, and your skin is your largest organ, having a thoughtful skincare routine is not something to take lightly. Think of it like this: You wouldn’t want to put something on your face that you wouldn’t want to put into your body. When you swap out your conventional products for clean products, you’re removing fillers, synthetic ingredients, synthetic fragrances, and toxic chemicals for nourishing plant-based ingredients.

The unnecessary ingredients in conventional beauty products have exacerbated acne in my personal experience, while beautiful, clean and wholesome ingredients in non-toxic products have made all the difference in my skin. That being said, I have prepared a collection of my favorite non-toxic products to use in your skincare routine if you have acne-prone skin.

The routine below is best suited to normal and oily skin. For anyone with sensitive, acne-prone skin, I’ve put together a different routine.

4-Step Daily Routine for Normal to Oily Acne-Prone Skin

1. Cleanser: OSEA Ocean Cleanser

I love this product! It is amazing at removing makeup and leaves your skin squeaky clean without feeling tight. It is also brightening from the nourishing algae, vitamins, and minerals.

2. Toner: Herbivore Jasmine Green Tea Balancing Toner

This is one of my very favorite toners. In addition to making you feel like you are in a field of jasmine flowers, this toner is excellent at keeping redness/acne at bay while also providing deep hydration.

3. Serum: Osmia Balance Facial Serum

This is a powerhouse product! It is formulated with an incredible ingredient for treating acne, and that is black cumin seed oil. It will fight inflammation and will help regulate the skin’s natural sebum production.

4. Moisturizer: OSEA Blemish Balm

This is a lightweight daily moisturizer packed with beautiful ingredients that are antibacterial, anti-microbial, and antiseptic. So in addition to providing hydration to your skin, this moisturizer will also work to treat any active acne, and keep any future breakouts at bay.

Clean Dirt

May Lindstrom

Farmaesthetics Blemish Tincture: Before I found this product, I actually was using tea tree oil and lavender oil to spot treat my blemishes. But this product blends them together for you, and in the easiest roller ball application. Tea tree and lavender are naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial, and sink into the blemish to treat it from within.

May Lindstrom The Problem Solver: Where do I begin? This mask is so powerful, smells so wonderful, and works so well. I cannot say enough good things about it. It is filled with detoxifying and antioxidant-rich spices to remove any unwanted residue from within the pores, while encouraging blood flow in the face. It is a powder, so you do mix a little bit of water with it until a beautiful mousse forms.

May Lindstrom Clean Dirt: You might be able to tell at this point that I have an affinity for May Lindstrom. Also a powder that turns into a mousse, the Clean Dirt is an amazing physical exfoliant and brightening treatment (who doesn’t like a two-in-one?). After massaging into the skin into circular motions, the mild granules will remove dead skin from your face while the freshly activated Vitamin C will brighten.
